How do we assess your Cardiovascular Health?
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a link between heart disease and prostate problems?
Yes
Cardiovascular disease and prostate disorders (such as benign prostatic enlargement and erectile dysfunction) share common risk factors — including obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and poor lipid profiles. Poor vascular health can reduce blood flow to the prostate and pelvic organs, contributing to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and erectile dysfunction.
Can poor heart health cause erectile dysfunction?
Absolutely
Erectile function depends on healthy blood vessels. Endothelial dysfunction — a key feature of cardiovascular disease — limits nitric oxide availability and impairs penile blood flow. Erectile dysfunction is often an early warning sign of cardiovascular disease, sometimes appearing years before heart symptoms.
Do medications for heart disease affect prostate or sexual function?
Some do
Beta-blockers and certain antihypertensives can contribute to erectile dysfunction or reduced libido. Conversely, statins may improve endothelial function and indirectly support sexual health. It’s important that men discuss medication side effects and alternatives with their doctor
How do testosterone levels affect both heart and prostate health?
Low testosterone is associated with increased cardiovascular risk factors (insulin resistance, obesity, dyslipidaemia) and impaired sexual and urinary function. However, testosterone replacement therapy must be managed carefully, as it can influence prostate size, PSA levels and fertility. Optimising testosterone within safe limits supports heart, blood vessel and prostate health.
Can improving cardiovascular fitness improve prostate symptoms?
Yes
Regular aerobic exercise, weight management, and dietary changes reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and lower metabolic risk factors. These lifestyle interventions can ease urinary symptoms, improve erectile function, and support healthy testosterone production — benefitting both heart and prostate function.
